They are not visible from space, they are visible from the air though!
The are called the Nazca lines.

A curious feature of the Nazca lines is that the animals nearly all have exaggerated reproductive organs, suggesting a fertility rite. A spider has an unusualy enlarged leg, which seems not to fit - until you realise there are S. American spiders the males of whom transfer sperm to the female using a specially adapted leg!!
Back in the 80s (I think) somebody attempted to build a hot-air balloon using materials and methods available to the peoples of the time, the argument being that they could have provided an overview and direction from the air. It flew, if I recall correctly, but not particularly well, and nobody really addressed how the the guy in the balloon was supposed to let the guys on the ground know where they were!
With a basic grasp of scales, and of directional astronomy (fairly easy in a cloudless desert), constructing gigantic copies on the ground of basic drawings is not actually that hard as a concept, though it is still a massive undertaking.

They are called the Nazca lines. Geometric patterns and images of animals, etc. formed by lines of stones & gravel on the surface of the Peruvian desert. They are certainly big enough to be seen from the air. But try looking at them on Google Earth and you'll see they are not visible from space! Some people have said they are evidence of extra-terrestrial life, but a far simpler theory is that the ancients put them there to attract the attention of their gods...

Listen to Lorraine R - she knows her stuff, the lines depict things such as a spider, a crane like bird, a lizard, and a monkey, plus quite a few that are just patterns of some sort. Quite a feat considering when they were made. Though quite why they were made considering nobody of the period would be able to appreciate them is beyond me.
