if you have a DVR recorder can you record on a external harddrive or transfer on one?

I would like to take the shows i recorded on my dvr and put them on my external harddrive is there a way to do it.

My Scientific Atlanta DVR has a SATA hard drive connector on the back. The manual says an added hard drive is used to add additional storage capacity along with the internal drive. The software does not provide for separating recordings or transfering recordings from one drive to the other.

I suppose you could try to fill up the internal drive then connect your external drive. Additional recordings may have to go to the external drive then.
