He is one of the greatest leaders of our time. He symbolized unity and freedom from oppression. He also showed us that peaceful opposition can indeed bring down an oppressive racist government. South Africa is still facing alot of problems but many people dont realize that it is only came out of an oppressive regime 12 years ago, it will take some time to heal alot of the wounds inflicted during the colonial and apartheid eras. Eventually South African will emerge as a beacon of light for which all africans can follow.

If only there were more leaders of his calibre. For anyone who is politically motivated to spend 28 years in a South African prison and come out and forgive his enemies and put his people and country first indicates he is a giant among men. Unfortunately I can't think of an international leader that compares.

Nelson Mandela stood up against tyranny, oppression, and racism. He was a man who stood up for what he believed in, and was willing to fight for it. In my book, he's a hero.
