If it was a microsoft popup then this is telling you ti update security patches, which help to stop people from attacking your PC, if your's in not a legal copy of XP then choose to download the patches and then on install choose to use CUSTOM setting and de-select the Microsoft Genuine advantage tool so as not to install that one.

Your Windows XP normally comes with a built-in firewall (above SP1 I think). This firewall will protect you from intruders, especially if you're connected directly to the internet (e.g. high-speed connection).

The error you get is a reminder to turn it on. It you're unsure of what you're doing, I'd recommend that you turn it on.

Then, make sure that you turn on your Automatic Windows Updates. These updates correct bugs and vulnurabilities that hackers may use to view your files or take control of your PC remotely. You can turn on your Automatic Updates this way:

Click "Start" -> Control Panel
Double-click "System".
Click on the "Automatic Update" tab and select "Automatic" (the first choice).
Click Ok.

Also, to get all the update, go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and select the "Express" button in the window.

Updating is good, it helps you fix any security holes that Windows XP might have.

Sometimes the updates are meant to fix programs that have problems running smoothly on windows xp.

So, when you see the message on the right corner of your screen "Updates are readyto be installed/downloaded", do so....
