I believe it goes back to the days of Dunkin Donuts having the only safe 24 hour place for officers on-duty to go to have a cup of coffee in the middle of the night. This is why we have the stereo typed lazy officers in movies. Now there are many places that are 24 hour so maybe we should encorporate a new stereo type instead of donuts. Answer is No I don't believe this happens in "real-life" with All cops.

No, they may eat at wherever the meal is free or highly discounted. Many places offer free\discounted meals to cops as it keeps crime at their establishments down and they also respect them as they put their lives on the line each and every day. The stereotype you refer to came from the early days of the "one horse town" when America was more rural.
Remember many American's own a gun and there are alot of them (especially in the country and big cities) who carry guns. You can buy a gun in any local shop.

it is a stereotype, but it is common.

I am a lawyer and one time I was cross examining a cop who was giving me a hard time about what he was doing immediately before he came to arrest my client. I asked him if there was anything that he had that could help him remember. I asked him if there was anything that I could do to help him remember. No to both questions. Then I asked if I showed him a map that was marked with all the donut shop locations in the city would that help him remember. He went nuts! (I got into trouble a little bit from that - the judge threatened to hold me in contempt).

Anyway, everybody in USA probably eats (too many) donuts.

Yes, they get hired so they can sit in the doughnut shop. My exboyfriend's dad was chief of police and my ex was also a cop, and both of them lived at the doughnut shop. I'm surprised Dunkin Donuts didn't name a pastry after them. It's an embarrassment to tax paying citizens everywhere.

cops eat anywhere with a discount or plain free, and FYI cops are lazy and stupid esp in the suburbs of chicago, all they do is piss people off by driving around and eating free dougnuts

The film industry is responsible for perpetuating many stereotypes. Remember "believe none of what you see,and half of what you hear".
