The Dogwoods comprise a group of 30-50 species of deciduous woody plants (shrubs and trees)

The name 'dogwood' is a corruption of 'dagwood', from the use of the slender stems of very hard wood for making 'dags' (daggers, skewers). The wood was also highly prized for making the shuttles of looms, for tool handles, and other small items that required a very hard and strong wood.

On June 20, 1955, the flowering dogwood (Cornus Florida L.) became Missouri's official tree. The tree is small in size, rarely growing over 40 feet in height or 18 inches in diameter. The dogwood sprouts tiny greenish-yellow flowers in clusters, with each flower surrounded by four white petals. The paried, oval leaves are olive green above and covered with silvery hairs underneath. In the fall, the upper part of the leaves turns scarlet or orange and bright red fruits grow on the tree.

Best time to move all trees is in the winter.

Dogwwod is a bush or shrub that comes in several varieties. One is called red ozier dogwood and when the leaves fall off in the fall it has really pretty red branches that look good in the winter snow. The fall is always the best time to plant because there is plenty of rain and cool nights. Do a good job of planting, right size hole and plenty of organic matter mixed with good soil and it will do great in the spring. i would also prune it back just a bit so it can get over the shock of replanting a little easier.

Dogwood is a beautiful, small tree with four-petaled flowers. It was my father's favourite tree. They are truly beautiful. The blossoms can vary from white to deep pink (white are my favourite).

They like to be planted best in the spring, but do not plant it too deeply! They prefer to be planted just deep enough to cover the roots.

Good luck with your tree! If you can bear to wait, I'd hold off until springtime, or you could damage or even kill your little guy!

Hope this helps...

The fall is a good time to plant them. Make sure you water them occasionally through the winter unless there is snow cover or the ground is frozen. And don't fertilize until spring.
