would it make a suitable present for a deaf person?

Yeah it would it would be a form of extra contact to the outside world for them. Also they can text but they can use the type talk service when they need to make a call. Its a free service, where the user types a message to the operator, and the operator relays the message to the person to the user is calling Then the operator types back to the user your reply. This service is free, and it gives that extra Independence which I imagine would be important.

A "smart phone" would. A regular phone, probably wouldn't, depending on their degree of hearing loss. The sidekick is probably the most popular phone among the Deaf.

if it is speciallly adapted to be very loud on the earpiece and ringtones - thats if u mean quite deaf - very deaf and not totally deaf - in which case it would be useless as they wouldnt be able to hear anyone on the other end of the phone - u can set it to vibrate to answer but they wouldnt hear the person on the other end..

absolutely, they can text just like all the rest, it'd be a great present. There are some mobiles that are designed for heavy text users, like big screens and easier keys.
