As a freelance journalist, you are employed only by yourself. You are commissioned by editors to do work.

In answer to your question, the most important thing to do is build up a contacts book. Contact books are made up of sources, anyone you have ever interviews, P.R people etc etc. As you network, you will get invites to these things.

Also join the NUJ, you will get a press card which once you have, will enable you to go into 'press' area's at events etc. Using this, you can also contact organisers and say you want to write about their event for 'x' publication (of course, an editor will have needed to commissioned this first)

For any journalist, freelance or not, it is vital that they have a substantial PR contact list and have good relationships with these people. Vice versa, it is crucial for the PRs to ensure that their media lists are comprehensive and this will include relevant freelance journalists. There are also several media databases which PRs use to keep their media lists up to date. Providing the freelance journalist is on the relevant lists and has a relationship with the PRs, they will get invites, press releases, phone calls and so on. In addition, most freelances will usually have one or two publications who they regularly provide copy for. If an invite or similar comes to the editor of that publication and it is relevant to the freelance, they will pass it on to them.

It s definitely not rude to be only invited to the reception, we ve been invited to the reception and were actually glad to not sit for an entire ceremony (kids, etc). Most of the people feel like that, very rarely would anyone be upset, especially those with small children, unless they are very close. Our daughter is getting married in a private ceremony, and we had a lot of people say "thank you for inviting us to the reception", not one of them were upset or felt snubbed. Do an online look and you ll find lots of invites for reception only. I hope you re enjoying your marriage.
