1996 ford escort, automatic, 2 liter,101,000miles thats all i really know about the car. i drove it a lot more then i ussually do yesterday and was kinda rough on it cause i was in a hurry but it was no more than 80 miles. when i left my freinds college at night i noticed if i steped on the gas pedal while it was in drive it would just rev up the engine unless it was lightly on the gas it took a couple blocks to get the car up to 30 mph then i had to stop at a light and it did it again it was worse this morning when i tested it. it wouldnt go up a hill in my neighborhood more than 10 mph unless i put the gear on low.

Yes, it's your transmission slipping when it tries to shift to a higher gear. Luckily it's still trying to move so that's good news. It needs to be rebuilt with a reputable transmission man, not someone who will just patch it and charge you just as much as a thorough overhaul. Since it is still moving you shouldn't need much more than a Master Rebuild kit that will have all new clutches, steel plates, rubber seals and gaskets. Most good transmission rebuilders will also want to install a new torque convertor because all that clutch material that has come off is now pumping through the fluid and collecting in the torque convertor. Also ask that whomever overhauls or replaces your transmission flushes out the cooler lines so that any loose matter will be washed away and won't end up in the new fluid and make it's way to your valve body ( this can make a valve stick). Good luck

The reason the car does not move when you accelerate is because the transmission is slipping. The first thing that you need to do is check the level of fluid in the transmission. You do that with the engine running and at operating temperature. The fluid should be red, not dark red or burnt. There are 2 marks on the dipstick itself it should be to the top one, if not add fluid a PINT at a time. These are pint marks unlike the motor oil dipstick which is quart marks. If the fluid at the proper level then the next thing you need to do is go to a repair shop and have them service the transmission. This does not always fix the problem but it is cheaper than rebuilding the transmission. If that does not work then you have no other alternative except to rebuild the transmission. Please check around though, transmissions work is not cheap. Get 3 or 4 estimates before committing to any one shop

"Automobili The Magnificent Say's" You have a big repair bill in your near future! Several things could have caused the transmission to start slipping most of which generated a lot of heat. Take the transmission dipstick out when the engine is idling. wipe with clean paper towel is the fluid dark burnt smelling and leaves gray stuff on the clean white paper towel? How's the fluid level? Call in your debtors call The family tow the car to get a new transmission or Ford AER re manufactured unit put in. Ever think about a new car?

Manufacturer recommends that you cahnge the transmission fluid at every 20,000 intervals. If you haven't done this it's time for one, but there is a downside, doing this this late in the game you may not get the tranny to work again. I suggest getting it to Cottman transmission for a *free* inspection, let the people who do this for a living, look at it, and don't try this repair yourself.

Check the fluid level of the transmission and make sure it is at the proper level and if it is OK then it most likely is slipping of the clutches which means repair or replacement.

It Could be the torque converter, it might not be working as it should. You should also replace the ATF, as the others already told yo to. Doesn't it has any leaks? You should also start saving just in case your transmission wears completely out. By now, the only thing I'd say you can do is to use the spare shifts: 2,1.
