I don't think you should find cats'-eyes in the middle of motorway lanes. Cats'-eyes mark the edges of motorway lanes

The markings are gradation lines for the police to use to catch you speeding. They are measured distances so they can do a time/distance calculation to assess your average speed.

White dots? Lines on the motorway/duel carriageway are pure and simply lane markings. Nothing to do with speed cops at all. Perhaps my friend you should read the Highway Code. (Methinks everyone should read the Highway Code from time to time - how many of you have NEVER seen the book since you "passed " your test?)

You say 'white dots.' I'm presuming this must be the cats eyes. They reflect your car's headlights at night so you can easily see the lanes.

At the left side of the lanes are red cats eyes and indicate the edge of the carriageway/hard shoulder. It shows you where you shouldn't drive, except in an emergency.

At an entry or exit slip road, they are green to signify this.

Orange cats eyes are seen t the right of the carriageway.

Older style cats eyes are self cleaning as you drive over them. As you drive over them, the reflector goes into its housing and a rubber strip cleans them. Newer style cats eyes do not have this function, but have a larger reflective area.

They became widespread during WWII during the black outs as street lights were turned off.
