Get rich. I use to make 100,000 pounds a year and had companies offering me free gifts, samples, trips to see things like world championship snooker, test BMW's at racetracks, a HSBC buffet party, lots of free Christmas parties, free VIP membership at night clubs.
When you don't need it there are lots of people wanting to be your friend and give you free stuff.

You have to cultivate people.
Easily done if you don't have skills and very difficult if you do.
Some people buy a trade off, Freemasons and the like where one day it will their turn to be the idol.
Golf clubs are another route but you have to know how to play above average.
Talk to your Barber he already knows the easy way.
Be two faced, in as much you don't tell people what you think of them
At all times be confident.
You have enough here to make a start as start it is and you be at it for the rest of your life until it becomes your life.
You will then look back and think why do I bother.
One last thing.
When you die you are on your own.
Just enjoy yourself chum.

Why do you have to be popular if people don't like you for who you are then you don't need those people in your life. All you can do is be the best person you can be. Wouldn't you rather have five true good friends than a hundred flaky ones?

Be a nice person and do good things...and people will like you.
Also, don't strive for popularity, strive for friends - there IS a difference. I'd rather have three good friends than be popular with a a whole crowd and have no close friends.

Keep smiling. This is how I make enemies respect me or become my friends as time goes by. Being popular requires charisma. I found that body language plays a fair role in making people around you understand your gesture.
