His message was "Why are you putting this religious crap on a homework help string?"

This is off topic here... take this religious nonsense and put it on the Religion and Spriitualism string where people actually WANT to answer it.

That God was sending Israelites into bondage (for 70 years)
but keep the faith and they would come thru it ok.

Lamentations is Jeremiah's eyewitness record of the aftermath of Jerusalem's destruction by the Babylonians under King Nebuchadnezzar in 586 B.C.
They (Judah) refused to heed God's warning for over 20 years.
He took care of business.

Jeremiah 3:8 might help
3:8 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.

He is also called the weeping prophet.

The book of Lamentations was also written by Jeremiah. He wrote it to describe the terrible destruction of Jerusalem. Some have described Lamentations as “a funeral dirge for Jerusalem.” In the Greek translation of the Old Testament, which was made in the third century before Christ, Lamentations is called “The Tears of Jeremiah.” Each of the five chapters of Lamentations is a poem. It shows clearly that God will punish even His own people if they do not repent of their sins

He faithfully warned the people of the coming judgment because of their sins, even though they refused to heed his warning. He spoke God’s message during the reigns of the last five kings of Judah, beginning with Josiah and ending with Zedekiah.
