I think there was two. There was a smaller one with brown hair. But, that is a question with no real answer at all.

I think that is because Gargarmel used magic to create her to help destroy the smurfs, but she ended up betraying him for other men (isn't that always the way with women) and lived happily ever after in the smurf village.
She now runs a rather successful brothel and is considered the richest Smurf in town (I wonder why?). She has many marriage proposals but is yet to accept one for fear that it may be a career killer.

Smuffette was actually meant to originally be one of three female smurfs, but the artists could only deside on one of the three so the smurfs have to procreate with just that dirty little vixen. That why she always walked funny, did you notice that?

she was a psycho slapper who killed all the other females so she could take all the other smurfs. There used to be big smurf gang bangs with papa smurf shouting who's your daddy.

Gargamel created her to infiltrate the Smurfs so she'd ;earn where they kept their smurfberry juice. But Papa Smurf turned her to good. Oh, and her hair was originally black.

DNA flaw in the smurf species is my guess. I mean, come on, all species have a rate of 50/50 more less. That's why they're extinct now.
