Aah (like "awe"), was an old moon god in charge of the moon-year (12x30 days). Besides "moon" his name meant "collar", "to embrace" and "defender".
His duties were shadowy and he was seen as a moon crescent often with sun disk upon it (two pictures left). He accompanied mainly Thot and Khons, but also others. Rarely he was upon the head of a sitting Osiris with whom he was known in texts as Osiris-Aah. He could be seen as Thoth-Aah with a crescent upon a pedestal standing in a boat (picture above). He took part in "The Book of the Dead" where he was quoted in a prayer presenting himself by saying: "I am the moon-god Aah, the dweller among the gods". His most famous roll in Egyptian mythology was in a tale where he gambled with Thoth and made him help the pair Nut and Geb to raise a family.

I am interested in your question because I had not realized that Aah was associated with "collar", "to embrace", and "defender". The usekh necklace has a counterweight on the back with little falcons and a symbol of the heart with a crescent inside it. The cross-section of the heart looks like the Moon just separating from the Sun after conjunction. So it acts like a protective collar for the nape of the neck.

As Aah-Tehuti the whole lunar cycle of 29.5 days was being represented. This was the dominant, all-embracing cycle of time within which everything on Earth was seen to be gestated and developed.

At Luxor Thoth holds the palm branch that puts out a new leaf every month. The New Moon or cresent represents the start of the month. But the New Moon meant much more to the Egyptians. This was the dark moment when the candidate for initiation withdrew into special caverns, grottos, underground constructions, the pyramids, etc. and underwent symbolic deaths and rebirth events that introduced them to the ka. Aah as the embracer and defender probably represented the power that protected the ka of the initiate during various ordeals.

Thoth was also Master of the Net. The Net was called the All-Embracing. Part of the Net was secured to the Moon and hence the passage of the Moon around the Earth.

The Egyptians placed protective collars on the necks of dogs. This collar protected the nerve ganglia that ran to the heart and helped protect the heart. When they depicted these collars on humans they were protecting a point of entrance at the back of the neck that probably linked the ka to the body and gave life to the body. If the stellate ganglion at the base of the cervical vertebrae is hit hard enough it can produce cardiac arrest. The Egyptians also linked a nerve from another cervical ganglion to the Eye that causes the pupil to either dilate or contract. In effect they believed that Sun and Moon together - especially the conjunction - were critical in the genesis of a human being. This included Eyes, heart, brain and so forth. Hathor was called Lady of every heart circuit so she was also linking the spine to the heart and back to the eyes. They called the left eye the moon and the right Eye the Sun. These represented the two natures. So Aah-Tehuti (Thoth) was shown with two faces. One nature is a self-radiance while the other is merely reflective and yet adds a powerful gravitational component to the All-Embracing Net. Incidentally the Net was also a symbol of the Pyramid. So the Pyramid was seen as something that caught, accumulated, concentrated and transformed the mysterious Nun into conscious Spirit. The Pyramids represented the auto-genesis of the Creator God such as Atum of Heliopolis partly through the agency of the Divine Ka. The Pyramid housed the Divine Ka as if it were a pattern for the invisible universe - similar to Plato's Eternal Living Being.

New Moon represents the moment when Osiris is resurrected in spirit state. The relation between Aah and Khonsu is important because at New Moon a candidate has the chance to enter spirit state and expand into the Netherworld where he requires protection from wrathful beings such as we also find in Tibetan texts. Khens or Khonsu means "far traveller", which may be a reference to Orion but also to the movement from the heart of the double or ka out into the Jackal Lake or Netherworld.

Probably Aah is a special reference to New Moon and the way New Moon kills on one level and heals or renews on another level. There is a point of danger at New Moon called "Osiris in his Danger". As a shadowy protector Aah-Tehuti in all likelihood provided that protection - a trait this deity or "neter" would share with Horus, Thoth, Maat, and in the end the Eye of Horus which was considered the ultimate protector and defender. I think Aah is a spiritual power caught in the essence of the New Moon, where Sun and Moon are seen as conjunct from the Earth's surface, the only place where their differences in diameter "resolve" and unite. Probably this results in some form of self-focusing or lens effect at the Earth's surface where the living seed becomes 'flesh'. If biological material did not self-focus and achieve recurrent and rhythmic coherence, we would probably never become conscious. With their preoccupation with the crossing of Sun and Moon and the Eye of Horus, it seems that the Egyptians had correlated properties of the New Moon with the way the Eye of Horus reconstitutes itself. This is usually associated with Thoth and Maat. But these are anthropomorphic images used symbolically to account for something that Nature demonstrates. The Egyptians were acute observers of Nature.

The New Moon was also used to count the Seds. The principle was that 1 day was equivalent to one year so that 30 days meant 30 years which was nearly one orbital return of Saturn. Both Saturn and the Moon were related to Thoth. The Sed Festival of Regeneration was every 30 years. It was probably the most important event in the Pharaoh's life. But most of these reasons were kept secret and transmitetd orally, which is probably why we know so little about the details of Aah's function.

In any case thanks for asking such a challenging question. It seems Aah was the hidden circle that embraced the Earth and gestated and protected life on Earth from seed to Spirit. That hidden circle was marked by teh path of the Moon and its mysterious life history. The Moon acts like a protective collar, a placenta of sorts by which various forces are absorbed and held in check. From within this protection life can grow and evolve.
