The English language spread over the globe with the growth of the British Empire , mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries. The empire is no more but we left behind our language and other things like our legal and educational systems. There was a saying that the sun never sets on the British Empire (because it stretched right around the globe). Now, happily, countries that were once part of that empire are independent and self governing.
I can only think that whoever said English is the global language because it's easy, speaks it as his native language. Anyone learning English as a second language will tell you that its subtleties and complexities far surpass any of the other Western languages.

As far as i know, English is a global language as we spread around the world in the days of the British Empire, which was large scale therefore English was the spoken word. Also, from what foreign friends have said, English is easy to learn. I know Pilots must learn English before they are allowed to fly and some other high responsibility jobs require English.

It is the standard for international business, science and technology. In past centuries other languages have had that distinction, it is presently English.

Because it is understood by the Hindi language and Hindi is the the most spoken language, and english is the language of the most powerful country.

Because Hollywood makes movies in which Aliens from outer space also speak English, so at least it's understood by everyone on Earth.
