I've never heard of those terms. Perhaps 'system side' refers to programming hardware and low level drivers.
'Application side' probably just refers to programming regular applications.

In most cases with system is the computer-system and the application is a software running in this system.
So Your project is between this two sides!

System side ==> A software is created using a software hints
The project act as a software while use
Application side ==> A project is created using some set of data collected form the company usiing a software.

System side projects deal with more system specific needs. These are mostly embedded software projects with tight system requirements. System engineering would involve system infrastructure like timers, message queues, mutex libraries etc tailored to specific system. Here programmer needs to be more concerned about memory, cost of hardware, final software image size, processing speed etc. Imagine your own handset which has call processing stack performing Applications like SMS, MMS etc but there is underlying System engineering that provisions memory area and all s/w infrastructure for this application to run based on cost of equipment required features from handset vendor like Nokia etc.
Pure application software projects don't have any such restrictions. Here its more concerned with User interface and end user aesthetics and appeal.

system side means networking side or hardware side, application side is project side.In networking u will be responsible for the system connection ,troubleshooting, hardware errors etc.
In application side u will be responsible for project completion. A task will be given to u ,u have 2 complete project before deadline.

system side is developers side i.e. they have to look at how data is to be processed and application side is end-user side i.e they have to see what data to be entered
