I have a couple young people that work for me that.....

1. Didn't know Montana was a state
2. Didn't know where Delaware was.

We had to memorize the 50 states and capitals in 5th grade, and I still remember them to this day? What in the hell are they learning?

They learn how to dial 911, they learn they do as they please, and they learn Mom and Dad are usually so dumb they can run them over. I got a niece, 7 years old, I know.

My youngest did the 5th grade about 10 years ago and he most certainly had to memorize all the capital. I know, I had forgotten way too many of them. I know them all now!

Also kids of lower SES get an unbelievably bad education. Safety is more important in their classroom than learning and no decent teacher will come withing 10 miles of an inner-city school. Budgets, HA, that money goes to the rich kids districts. Its a wonder and a blessing upon the few good teachers who persevere that they learn at all.

We as a nation are so worried about falling behind the other countries, that we are pushing our children too hard to go forward. In the meantime we are spending less time on the basics. I read a report that first and second graders are feeling the same type of pressure that the seniors are about achieving. They are getting burned out.
Lets not forget that children need to play and have fun to sometimes.

Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.
You can't start a fire with "wet wood."
Maybe the $8/hr teachers get to start the "fire" is the problem.
Can't blame the student, compare the Military Spending to that of DOE's.

We still teach them, they just aren't held accountable for knowing it anymore.
