For the most part, fire is a mixture of hot gases. Flames are the result of a chemical reaction, primarily between oxygen in air and a fuel, such as wood or propane. In addition to other products, the reaction produces carbon dioxide, steam, light, and heat. If the flame is hot enough, the gases are ionized and become yet another state of matter: plasma.

Flame is a gas in most case a series of reactions take place to form a gas of flame whichdies if not supplied with the nutrients which form a compound in a process called burning. As far as gas being plasma it is wrong since as far as my knowledge goes plasma is a state of matter which shows properties of both solids and liquids

With the exception of special mixtures like gunpowder, burning can only take place in a gaseous state.

Therefore a flame contains mostly gasses, even wood when it is burning is first turned to gas before it can burn.

In addition to the gasses in a flame, there may be small amounts of elemental carbon and even tinier amounts other chemicals. These give a flame a characteristic color. Carbon produces a bright yellow, copper blue, etc.

You can demonstrate that there is carbon in a flame by holding a COLD spoon in the yellow part of a candle flame for a few seconds. The coldness prevents the carbon from burning and it deposits as a black coating on the spoon.
