Most of these posts are correct in saying that the 13 stripes represent the 13 colonies or original states. The stars are the states now (50) but the assumption that the colour red is about blood shed in the war of independence is absolute rot!! The flag of the unified colonies before independence was 13 stripes exactly as now but with the union jack in the top left corner as it still is in Australia and New Zealand flag and was in Canada's flag until recently (which was also red). After independence this was replaced by stars. Canada and the States' flags were at one time as similar to each other as Australia and New Zealand's still are and so I would assume that the colours are about where they are rather than any romantic notion of patriotism.

The stars represent the states (50) and the stripes represent the 13 original colonies. The colors are just the national colors, same as Englands, remember we were part of the british empire.

There are many stories. So have it that the flag was derived from the east India company ensign, but my favourite (living in Bristol) is that the flag was taken from the family crest of Richard Amerik, one of the funders of Cabot's voyage. His crest includes a shield with red stripes and a field of blue with stars. You can see it the Lord Mayor's chapel at College Green, Bristol.

I think it has something to do with the african animal called zebra. Think it started back during the american invation of the north american continent. The army from europe had recently been on holiday in their african colonies, and thought why not bring a little pet with us to our new country of conquest. Though when they got their, it escaped and someone shot at it by mistake, it got all blody, and therfor the red and white stripes...
thats what i think anyhow,,, hehehe

Each stripe stands for one of the original 13 colonies.

Red is for the blood of patriots, shed that we might be free.

White is for the purity of their cause, that is, that men might rule themselves.
