There are wireless phones for the home that work off of a hard wired base station with wireless receivers, so mobile or cellular would apply better to phone that work from cell towers. Mobile or cell would be more descriptive of such phones, but they too are wireless.

Portable phone might be better for home-based phones because the base stations are wired, it's the handsets that are wireless. But for cell phones I would use "cell", but wireless as in "Cingular Wireless", "Verizon Wireless" would not be incorrect. "Mobile" also is OK for cell phones. Some people even today insist on calling cell phones "car phones" because this was the first real use for cell phones when the were attached to a unit wired into the car.
