mots are due every 12 months but you can get it done up to a month early getting you an extra month of mot (13months) not many people know this but its a nice way of getting a wee bit for free off the government which definately is a rarity

It is perfectly legal to drive a car to an MOT testing station for a pre booked test, and it doesn't need tax either. You must be insured though, and the car must be in a roadworthy condition (this applies whether or not it has an MOT). That doesn't mean you can drive anywhere you like on the way to or from the test mind, just to the testing place and back using a reasonably direct route. If it fails the test it cannot by definition be in a roadworthy condition - make sure your car is in good order before taking to the testing station.

You're not doing women drivers any favours here by asking a question which should be common knowledge. Forgive me if you're a (young) new driver.
MOT's can only be done on a yearly basis and the DVLA has set a minimum charge of £45. If you're charged any extra then take your car elsewhere. Some garages have a free re-test scheme, but they usually insist that the garage who did the MOT, will carry-out any repairs. If however you want to take the vehicle away for repairs, you'll probably have to pay for another MOT examination, crafty eh!

It is Legal to drive the vehicle to a pre-booked MOT appointment. If it needs repairs, they have to be done somewhere, so if I was in your position, I would book the MOT at a garage that you are happy to leave the car with, should it fail, for repair. Take with you the relevant insurance document and a completed tax application form. If the car passes it's MOT (or when it has been repaired and passed it's MOT), collect the MOT certificate from the garage and go to the post office and tax it while the car itself is still at the garage and then drive it home.

Once the car is three years old it must have an MOT every 12 months. Look at the certificate to see when it expires.

its first MOT is due when the vehicle is 3yrs old and then every 12 months, you can do it upto 30 days early and your new MOT certificat expiry date can be forward dated to 12months from current expiry date so you can end up with a 13month MOT cert but it must be done by law every 12 months
