aseptic technique is extremely important. When inserting an I.V. into a hospital patient, you do not want to contaminate the patient with airborne contaminants as well as bacteria, yeast, virus, etc. If aseptic technique is not instituted, the patient is at risk for Sepis(blood poisioning). If bacteria makes its way into the bloodstream, they multiply in the millions and billions to the point where they overtake the body and the patient dies of Sepis. Therefore, handwashing, proper clothing, masks, gloves, shoe covering, and the use of a horizontal laminar flow hood is required. In preparing chemo drugs, you would use a vertical laminar flow hood.

Are you needing to look this up for homework or just asking a question?? No trying to be mean but if you are in a class that you need to learn why it is important and haven't gotten that from class yet...little worried.....
because it helps prevent secondary infection and transfer of infection from one patient to another if the instrument is used more than once, or transfer of infection from one person to another.

To avoid infection. The germs are getting better and better at ignoring drugs (evolution at work), and the best way of avoiding infection is to keep the germs out from the start.

It is important so that we keep people alive instead of infecting them with brucellosis, tsatsugamushi fever, leishmaniasis, bubonic plague, dientamoeba histolytica, scabies, etc....and doctors sometimes actually wash their hands after going to the bathroom or doing rectal examinations. I seldom pick my nose in front of patients and I seldom squeeze zits. Your question is assinine.
