At each well-baby check, the pediatrician does a series of checks to determine what "developmental milestones" an infant is demonstrating. Some of these mental growth markers are the opening of the clenched fists, the curling or not curling of the toes in response to stroking the underside of the foot, cooing, following or reaching for an object, responding to the others around them, and the beginning of speech. All of them demonstrate the level of brain development- which I am assuming you mean when you say mental growth. Any good book about infant growth and development will list the developmental milestones and the approximate ages they begin to appear, as well as the age by which they should have appeared.
