Due to the Butterfly Effect Theory ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterfly_effect ), I'd be careful, and not make major trips too far into the past or future.
To be on the safe side, I'd make mini trips into the past to fix thangs to go my way. Here are some examples:
Ask a girl out, and she says no. ... Go back a few minutes, and try a different approach. If that doesn't work, go back a few minutes and try another approach.
When funds are low, go back a few minutes before a couple lottery drawings, and buy the winning tickets. Buy & Sell on the stock exchange.

After getting all the fun stuff (Women, Money, Hobbies, Travelling, Sports, Relaxing ... more) out of my system, I'd try to correct the bad things in my world. I would build this Computer program to send data back in time ... http://web.archive.org/web/20050221085625/http://www.upi.com/view.cfm?StoryID=20021001-125805-3380r to find cures for the worlds' diseases.
Money would be as abundant as the air we breathe. Can you imagine all the good that can be done for mankind? Can you imagine all the fun Fun FUN that can be done for my selfish pleasure .... ( Insert evil laugh here ) >=0)

I'd head for the Nile to watch the aliens help those poor benighted humans build the pyramids. Then Machu Pichu. Then Easter Island. Then Stonehenge. The the Giant's Wall in the Devil's Triangle.
Then I'd come back with snapshots of the saucers and publish a book that everyone would think was a fake.
Then I'd head for Troy and meet Hector and Helen and Paris and all those folks. I might ask Helen back to the good old 21st for a drink, if she wasn't too hairy.

I'd start from visiting the building of the Parthenon, 5th century B.C. Meet Plato, Aristotle, Alexander of Macedonia. Then I'd take a trip to Jerusalem, 33 A.D. A glimpse at the Middle Ages, not too close to the cities (too many sick people). A stop at the French Revolution and then a jump to the Napoleonic years. A brief visit to Sheakspeare, Keats, Byron, Goethe, Dostoefsky, Rimbaud, Freud, Jung, Adler, Einstein, Hesse, Scroendiger, Watson and Crick. The WW1 trenches, eat popcorn watching The Jazz Singer (first movie with sound). Meet Tolkien, CS Lewis, Hugo Pratt. May '68. Be at my grandparents' wedding and visit my parents at school. Then right back home, today.
Oh, and remember to bring a camera with me....

The farest end of the human timeline. It would be very very interested to see if we evolve or our world is covered by polluted cloud and people found a way to survive and colonize in other planets.

I'd stay right here. Things would probably be worse anywhere I chose to go because I am socialized for this time period.
