I have had this problem before, so I got my laptop erased. I then used its recovry disc to put everything back on. The problem stopped for a short while and began again. I also tried to increase the pageing file size. that didn't work. Last I tried to reinstall the audio driver. Didn't work. Any other idea would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you don't have enough RAM - or available memory. Go to Start Run msconfig and look at the Startup tab. Is there some memory hogging program that thinks it needs to be in start up? If not, you might want to consider adding more RAM. It's cheap enough.

Yes this usually happens when the IDE controller drivers have lost there association with the sound drivers / hardware (basically)

Need to uninstall the sound card /chip again - DON'T restart yet

Now in the dev manager go up to the option that says IDE/ATA ADAPTI controllers > click on the plus > right click on the one that contains the CONTROLLER (ignore the channels) - uninstall this and then restart > when PC find new hardware may ask you to restart again

see if this works (usually does)

If not back in the device manager > at the ide ata adapti controllers > double click on the ide channel > look at the devices ensure that the transfer mode says DMA is available if not change it

hope this helps

PS - Not usually RAM when just listening to music - music not a heavy resource user

Most of these problems happen because of the speed of the processor, among other things. You need to pay particular attention when the problem begins. More than likely, there is a process that is "time slicing" with your sound card. The first thing I would try after the problem manifests itself is connect an USB headset (Not using the out jack on the sound interface) and see if the problem persists there. That would tell you that there is an IRQ issue (or time slicing) with the processor.

Its possible of 3 things: (1) You have a virus, (2) Your disk are dirty and just need to be cleaned really well before you play them or (3) your harddrive needs to be cleaned by a professional.

possible lack of memory. Try it with a fresh reboot.

You may want to send this problem to www.asktheexperts.com but include the computer brand / model no. / operating system / installed memory.

If I knew the brand of the computer I could help you more.

Geez. The kind of music you listen to and the kind of movies you watch must be really groos - that it causes your computer (supposed to be a lifeless device) to shudder.

change the kind of music you listen to and see if your comp behaves better.

Best of luck
