hmm...
alright, so the large boxes in total contain 42 more muffins than two small boxes
let's take the number of muffins in each small box as x
then, 2x + 42 = 2/5 of m (m is the total number of muffins)
and 4x = 1/2 of m
now subtracting the second equation from twice the first equation,
4x + 84 - 4x = (4/5 - 1/2) of m
which gives, m= 84/0.3 = 280
so, (2/5 + 1/2) of 280 muffins were packed
i. e. 252 muffins were packed
that leaves 280 - 252 = 28 muffins unpacked
(THERE!)

First, convert all the fractions to a common denominator.

Large boxes: 2/5 = 4/10
Small boxes: 1/2 = 5/10
Hence, "not packed" = 1/10.

The difference between 5/10 and 4/10 is 21.
Hence, 1/10 is 21.
Hence, 21 muffins were not packed.

i agree with 28 which is answer by chimera and 1/10 of the muffins were unpacked very simple suppose the quantity left is x so 2/5+1/2+x=1

x=1/10 and this agrees with 280total and 1/10 left is 28 .

2/5 = 40%
1/2 = 50%

40% of them in 2 large box therefore 20% in 1 large box
50% of them in 4 small box therefore, 12.5% in 1 small box

20% - 12.5% = 7.5%

7.5% = 21
100% - 40% - 50% = 10%

therefore 10% = 28... or so i think..

check. 280 muffins..
2/5 x 280 = 112

1/2 x 280 = 140

280 - 112 - 140 = 28 correct =)

LET L = NUMBER OF MUFFINS IN A LARGE BOX
S = NUMBER OF MUFFINS IN A SMALL BOX
THE SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS ARE
L = S + 21
(2L)*(5/2) = (4S)*(2)
FIND L AND S
