The overpaid mistakes of this market
Joe Borowski Florida Marlins- Not a true closer. Will get paid like one though.

Jeromy Burnitz Pittsburgh Pirates - lots of HRs but not much else. Low RBI and high KO for those HRs.

Mike Cameron San Diego Padres - Already one of the worst free agent signings in history. He'll probably get almost as badly overpaid this go around.

Jose Cruz Jr. Los Angeles Dodgers - See Burnitz, same kind of player.

Jermaine Dye Chicago White Sox - Had a better year than any two of his previous bests combined. Will sign for big bucks and revert to normal injury prone lack of productivity. However most GMs only see one seasons stats and so Dye will get a big contract from somebody. Somebody dumb and rich.

Carl Everett Seattle Mariners - Badly overpaid last contract. More of the same. While a decent hitter his attitude issues and unwillingness to play as member of a team make him a liability.

Gary Matthews Jr. Texas Rangers - Will parlay a great half season into a good contract then revert to being benched or released before first year or two of contract is out.

Alfonso Soriano Washington Nationals - Excellent hitter, steals bases, has great power. Defensive liability who insists on playing 2b. Will get big contract this year but will not improve defense to make himself worth that contract.

Arthur Rhodes Philadelphia Phillies - Pretended to be a closer this year. Has a history of folding under pressure. Will get signed for a closer's contract then wind up losing job and going back to being a very good set up man for a closer's salary.

Tony Womack Chicago Cubs - Anything you pay him is too much.

Best cantidates to get paid little but play like a star. Most of these guys are badly underated. As long as you don't try to use Hawkins as a closer he is a great setup man. Eaton has shown real potential to develop into an ace. Delluci and Catalanotto can just plain hit.

Frank Catalanotto Toronto Blue Jays
David Dellucci Philadelphia Phillies
Adam Eaton Texas Rangers
LaTroy Hawkins Baltimore Orioles
Dustin Hermanson Chicago White Sox
Shea Hillenbrand San Francisco Giants
Aubrey Huff Houston Astros3B
Cory Lidle New York Yankees
Ray King Colorado Rockies

Sidney Ponson New York Yankees
Mark DeRosa Texas Rangers
Richard Hidalgo New York Yankees
Ted Lilly Toronto Blue Jays

As a NY Yankee fan, I can honestly say that if A-Rod has another horrible playoff series, look for him to be the biggest name to be an off season trade. NY fans won't put up with too many more excuses from him not producing

For a lefty pitching, I would love to see the Yankees get Willis, and with the way the marlins always unload high payroll players, that might not be too far fetched, and another high profile free agent might be Mike Mussina, his contract is up and I am not sure if they Yankees will exercise their option. Oh and Gary Sheffield, with the Bobby Abreau trade Gary has no place to go, unless he works out at first.
