No...the sand is not clean and it is too fine. Get ceder chips instead or carpet shreds. My rats love the inside of bedding...like mattresses, pillows or comforters NOT down, but the synthetic material. Go to Wal-Mart buy a few cheap pillows and cut them open--I bet they will love it!

Anything you got from outside is going to have bacteria and other creatures in it that could make your rat sick. If you want to make him a sand box get some sand from the pet stores that they use for reptile bedding.

I don't know. There might be bacteria and sand flea mites in it. It's not really sterilized, so I would check with your vet first. Your pet rats are used to a sterile, clean environment, so they may not have any immunities that an outdoor substance could bring.

If you have good clean sand I'm pretty sure rodents love rolling in that stuff, gerbils do so why not rats

no i wouldnt put them in that. there can be alot of residue from run-off and maybe even parasites or bacteria. you can buy sterilized sand at most large toy stores. they carry it for their sand boxes. that would be much safer for your pets. good luck

sterilize it by putting it on a large baking/cake pan and heat it up in the oven. Gardeners also do this with dirt to make their own potting soil.
