Dr Phil, the bad astronomer, get's quite passionate about the whole equinox thing, and maintains that the sun crossing the celestial equator is the middle, not the start of the season. What's the official take on this?

Actually, thats a very good question because while it may seem obvious, it's not. Autumn may be starting here in the U.S. however, it is not the same all over the world.

The people on the Southern Hemisphere of the Earth are just now starting their Spring. When we start Winter, they will be starting Summer. Opposite sides of the world are always experiencing different seasons at the same time.

This is because of the Earth's rotation & it's orbit & it's position from the Sun. So, as you can see, whether or not it is Autumn time of the year all depends on where you live :)

Thanks for the good question. Have a nice Autumn (or Spring)

Dr. Phil is making a very common mistake; that being he has not allowed for changes in the earth's orbit over time. While one would think that this would automatically also change the time that the sun crosses the cel. eq., one must also factor in all the other changes this brings about. Most of these changes will be miniscule for generations, but they do exist, and, in cosmic time they do influence the seasons.
