Have they updated their currencey since September 2004. IU am going again next week. When I got my money, the 1000 yen note is different since 2004. Will the 2004 'version' still be accepted in Japan?

2004 stuff hasn't been updated. You still run into some old machines that won't accept the new 1000 Yen bills and even the less new 500 yen coins!

Off the beaten track areas like parts of Sado Island, a number of machines even those on buses don't take the new money.

Yes, I was there last summer 2006 and they still accepted the old 1000 yen bills I had when I returned...even the 10,000 yen...
it wont worth anyways to keep for long so just use it soon as you arrive there.

I remember that it was the autumn or the end of 2004.
Japan relaesed new design of note.
However, you can pay with the old one. Yes it is accepted.
