Actually this habit existed before "americans" did. since the today called "americans" are just people escaped from their original countries, they brought different habits with them.
Rice has been used as a symbol of fertility and as a wish for a "full pantry" in various parts of the world from ancient to modern times.
Throwing things at a newly married couple is a very old tradition that may date back to ancient Rome or Egypt or even further back.
Americans should be the ones throwing hamburgers.
Oh and I can't resist commenting about the law to protect birds, LOL this is really hilarious, like birds don't know what to pick for food heheheheheheh, better worry about hurting innocents and children in stupid wars.
