A *Media center is a computer adapted for playing music, watching movies and pictures stored on a local harddrive or on a (in some cases wireless) network, watching DVD movies and often for watching and recording television broadcasts. Some software is capable of doing other tasks, such as finding news (RSS) from the internet. Media centers are often operated with a remote control, connected to a television set for video output, and can often function as a normal personal computer. A media center can be purpose-built, or created by individuals by adding media center software to a PC or some other computer, for example an Xbox.

Typical media centers offer the following advantages to the user:

1. Ability to receive digital media files (via direct video signal, computer network or USB)
2. Ability to store digital media (usually on a standard computer hard disk drive)
3. Ability to playback digital media through standard television or hi-fi equipment
4. Simplicity (compared to a computer equipped to accomplish transfer, storage and TV/hi-fi playback)
5. Cost savings (compared to a computer equipped to accomplish transfer, storage and TV/hi-fi playback)
6. Portability (compared to a computer equipped to accomplish transfer, storage and TV/hi-fi playback)

[[ *Media centers sometimes have hardware that is not usually seen in personal (desktop)computers, such as receivers for remote controls, or television tuner cards*]]

Hardware requirements>>

Media Center has higher hardware requirements than other versions of Windows XP. MCE 2005 requires at least a 1.6 GHz (or equivalent) processor, DirectX 9 hardware-accelerated GPU (such as a recent ATI Radeon or Nvidia GeForce), and 256 MB of RAM. Some functionality, such as Media Center Extender support, use of multiple tuners, or HDTV playback/recording carries higher system requirements.

Media Center is much more restricted in the range of hardware that it supports than most other software DVR solutions. Media Center tuners must have a standardized driver interface, and they must have hardware MPEG-2 encoders, closed caption support, and a number of other features. Media Center remote controls are standardized in terms of button labels and functionality, and, to a degree, general layout.

Whereas...Desktop comp//

A desktop computer is a personal computer made for use on a desk in an office or home.they are used for performing office tasks, organizing digital photos, video editing and Internet access.

Hardware of a desktop..

The hardware in a desktop computer is modular, making it easy for someone with intermediate knowledge of a computer to modify one. The internal hardware of a basic desktop computer consists of RAM, CPU, a motherboard, a graphics card and a sound card as well as additional onboard cards for Ethernet and other ports.

Well the comparison you are asking for is a bit off. Media Center is considered a normal desktop computer. The difference is Media Center comes with extra software made specifically for media. Media is Movies, Music, Pictures. People that like to play with digital cameras and camcorders really like Media Center because of the built in software that manages pictures and videos. It also has a television tuner software built in to the operating system ( so to utilize media center properly you must have a TV Tuner card installed into your PC. So it is a computer and a television, video, picture, and music manager. I have all these capabilities on my system but I do not have Media Center. I installed the hardware myself and can do more than Media Center with just Windows XP Pro. I am a PC Tech and this is easy for me. But for most people Media Center eliminates the need to customize. Hope this helps, good luck.

They are simply two slightly different operating systems; the Media Center version is designed to better handle the use of the computer as a tool for entertainment in the home, rather than to function as a business or educational tool.
