It is the over whelming desire to PRO CREATE!! As humans we seek the ideal partner to mate with to ensure the strongest genes. A lot of this is indicated by how a person looks. Full breasts and hips, strong arms and shoulders, etc...

Yes, I've always wondered, and apparently we care about it because it is a somewhat reliable indicator of physical health. I read about research that was done where the average of a large number of faces (mathematical average of the proportions of nose, lips, etc) was done and the resultant mean (not average, in reality) closely resembled what we consider a beautiful face. The theory was that we, as a species have learned to consider beautiful the physical traits of the mean of the population. This is interesting, because if you think about it, normally, people that deviate from the mean tend to be individuals who are not normal in some way. In older times lack of normalcy might in a lot of cases be due to disease or to genetic differences that might make the individual have a hard time surviving in his/her environment, and so, we "learned" to pick as our mates, and therefore, as beautiful (our selection criteria for possible mates) those individuals that were close to the mean of the population. After generations of passing on the genes that had "learned" to select mates in this way (the genes that "learned" to select individuals farther away from the mean probably did not make it to adulthood as often as those that "learned" to select individuals in the mean and thus the "mean" or "current definition of beauty" selecting genes got to become adults and reproduce, hence creating more people with "mean" selecting genes) we came to what our species is, a bunch of people that consider what is beautiful right now.

Because they are way to shallow to care about anything else!!
There's so much more to a person then the physical aspects!! Its just sad that some ppl might not ever notice b/c they automatically judge you based on your looks only!!

How can I say this delicately? Ugliness is a necessary evil. Without it we wouldn't appreciate beauty. However, using the word "ugly" is something I've tried to teach my children not to do. Beauty comes in all forms, not just outward attractiveness. The Bible speaks of beautiful women, so it's nothing to be ashamed of. But with great beauty comes great responsibility. Beautiful people who let beauty go to their heads are not truly beautiful.

we care because our physical appearance is what we present to the world. i know people say looks don't matter, but have you ever looked at a really unattractive guy and said "wow - i bet he's nice" - yeah right!

One should have vision to admire the inner content. But once that vision comes, it no longer matters.
