How can i measure my pet axolotl without touching him?

He is in his tank and if i take him out i might drop him.

Put something that you can measure next to him and take a picture. A lot of people will use a dollar bill. That way you can look at the picture and see his size compared to the dollar. Knowing the size of the dollar you can estimate the length of your pet.

put a ruler in the water then put some food next to it and hope it swims next to it
