Its the most annoying question, and since I work in a video store I get it......ALL THE TIME. I cant recommend the newer ones they are so terrible. I guess Im more of a thriller fan. Blood and gore vs a good scary murder? Anyone have anything I can tell the customers?

A film that scared the pants off me when I was 12 was The Haunting, starring Clare Bloom. It's (as the title suggests) about ghosts (that's horror, isn't it?), rather than about people getting their heads chopped off etc.

It's not one of your 'newer ones' either. It was made in 1960.

The Japanese "Uzumaki" (2000). Japanese horror is superior to American-it relies more on scripting and cinematography rather than the cop out of special effects. The premise is so unique and downright disturbing.

the Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If you study the movie at all, then you will find out it is loosely based on a true life serial killer Ed Guien

House of Wax. The Vincent Price classic, not the garbage starring that millionaire tart.

I don't watch them anymore, but I used to like Hellraiser. It's less gory than most. But only the original, the sequels were awful.
