Hey Krista,

Beethoven and the first President of the United States, George Washington, had alot in common!

Both were known as being VERY business like...

Both were known as having SUPERIOR INTELLIGENCE...

And BOTH had very bad teeth!

Washington's had been pulled and he had falsie's, Beethoven had lost most of his molars and had bad fitting false rear teeth.

And you thought you had a mean dentist!

I think it is a common misperception that painters somehow paint exactly what they saw when painting a person, as if they were only taking a picture (btw there are no photgraphs of Beethoven).

How Beethoven is portayed in a painting is an artistic decision, and is part of the legend or myth of Beethoven as the masculine hero of music. By all accounts Beethoven was a short pudgy unattractive man, but this would not be an appropriate portrayal of a masculine hero. Artists painted Beethoven as angry to capture the fierce, intense, and brooding quality that is associated with his music. Beethoven's expression is an artisitc symbol, not a realistic representation.

just imagine what he'll look like if he smiled in his pictures... people might not take him too seriously if he tried doing that... or the photographer suggested that he should look angry in his pictures...for a change...

You spelled it right ...just not capitalized (the first letter)
I would say because back then they had to pose for a painting of oneself- like forever...also maybe because he was deft, although that didn't stop him from composing great music. I used to practice ballet to his music.

I think you might be wrongly confusing a stern, serious look for anger.
