Ewwwww - I hate them!!
You can buy a spray that you put all along the skirting boards that should get rid of them. Not sure where you can buy it though - I guess some ofthe larger supermakets must sell it, otherwise try somewhere like Robert Dyas.

Bengal spray and foggers. The female egg can have 30 live coachroaches hatch at one time. So they can multiply very quickly. Do not wait, once you get infested it is extremely hard to get rid of them. Bengal makes a product that makes reproduction impossible, buy that one. It is a little pricey but you will save money in the long run.
Good luck

if your in rented accomadation its the landlords duty to hire a professional to rid the vermin. but only if it was already furnished. cockroaches love warm places, check the tv. if its an old style tv, unplug it and take of the back. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING INSIDE! if you see any roaches, schoosh them out with a hoover. if any escape stamp on them. but! let it be known cockroaches are not a problem to human health unless your infested with them. yes unsightly, yes ugly but a few will not harm you. but if you see any just kill them.

You can get sprays for them but don't where you can pick them up from. Do a through and proper spray as soon as you can. Do another spray at least once a week for the next 8 weeks in case hey have given birth (I think cockraoches have a 6 week gestation period but you can't kill the larvae using spray - you have to wait until they are born).

A good whack with the back of a shoe works wonders, or you can lay cockroach baits under furniture where family pets can't get to them and chew on them.

I suggest that you avoid commercial sprays because of their toxicity to people, pets, etc. The simplest, safest and most effective method I have found is to sprinkle some boric acid powder in concealed areas at backs of cabinets, under furniture, etc. where roaches have been seen. You can also sprinkle it on carpets and rugs, and sweep it in with a broom. It kills fleas as well as roaches.

Yuck. Get some indoor bug killer from the hardware store (the kind with the hose attached to the trigger spray) and spray your whole frickin' house with it semi-annually. That'll save on extermination costs.
