Jeff Buckley cant be categorize really, because he covered jazz songs, he did a duet with Chriss Cornell (soundgarden, Audioslave) He sang songs by Edith Piaf, he sang blues songs, rock songs, he was also a very good blues guitar player..
He composed a lot of songs in different styles, some were soft rock, blues, blue grass, jazz, you name it, but everything was from the heart, he possessed one of the most beautiful voices ever, he was a singer and a poet, I had the honor of catching him live in New York at a club I used to go all the time.....try downloading some tracks from Limewire...
I can suggest you to download and listen to Hallelujah (beautiful and full of emotion) Lilac Wine, Everybody Here Wants You,
Goodbye my Lover, Cry, Dream Brother, Farewell Angelina(Bob Dylan's cover) All Tomorrows Parties, If you see her say hello, Grace, In my Arms, I want Someone Badly..
I can go on forever, but try and give a good listen to these songs
worth it, hope you enjoy them as much as all of his faithful fans..
hope this helps you : )

i am not a big fan of his. if you want something cool from that time period try Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs or even Frank Zappa.
i find Buckley too self absorbed.
