It's true -the states you mentioned (+ a few others) are bible belt states where they choose to practice their version of Christ's teachings thus closed minded (most not all).
As for the second part of your question-consider this: The people you mentioned are Gay right? Were they raised in the south? Have they had that southern religion as a background? If you can answer yes to all 3 questions you will get the picture-FEAR is a hard thing to overcome no matter what form it comes in.
There are, mostlikely, many answers to your question so take this as only one please.
The area of the south where I live there are many many couples that are having or trying to have long term relationships.
I, for one, am single at the moment and due to lack of other singles in area-well you get the picture.
Hang in there the right one will come along.

I live in Atlanta and this city is the most open minded city in the South when it comes to gay relationships. I beleive Atlanta is the most gay friendly city in the South because they have gay pride week here on Labor day Weekend which is becoming more and more popular every year. Then the gays have their own areas of town they live in like Midtown and Buckhead. They are accepted at churches, schools, jobs and social events. I personally had to learn to accept it because I'm from Ohio and I wasn't raised around alot of gays so I didn't understand their behavior. I've been living here for 8 years and now after seeing it so often, I have learned to deal with it. But to answer your question, I think people in the south are very religious and because of their strong belief systems they tend to shun away people who are not living by the Bible. What they don't realize is that they are sinning as well by not accepting gays because the Bible does say love thy neighbor as you love thyself.

Then take a ride to the North or even up northern tip of New Hampshire to Nova Scotia and to Russia and back to Alabama. Now you got your answer.

Life is more simple with a closed mind, and people feel better about themselves if they have someone to hate and put down.
I am in the extreme south of the planet and we are very tolerant.

I live in Ga, and it is true, but also there are a lot of people here who know of me and my partner and they don't care. And it is true it is the bible belt and there are a lot of religious people who do not believe in homosexuals.

Many of the religions through-out the bible belt and mid west preach bigotry and hate toward all LGBT peoples.

Since this is in the Homosexual category I assume you are referring to openmindedness about gays, etc. I guess it's got a lot to do with the religious preferences of those of us in the South. A lot, if not most, of us are Protestant, which includes Baptists, Methodists, Church of God, Church of Christ, and several others. Though we argue amongst ourselves about many matters of religion, we pretty much all agree that homosexuality is a sin. It is not genetic. You are not born with it. And if you choose it, it is not the will of God. It is a temptation of Satan to keep you apart from God. That's what all sin is - a temptation to do things that keep you out of God's will. But, like any other sin, you can be forgiven of it.

buddy, the states you mentioned are somewhat bible belt states. bible belt people arent open minded, they are usually conservative. its not that so few people are open minded, its that you just arent looking in the right place for the freak you want. try a larger city.
