If you enjoy being with this friend, and want to attend the party with him, then there is no reason for you not to go.
If this is your first date, then it is normal to feel nervous.
just go and enjoy the evening.
if you know the other girl that is attending the party, at least you will have someone there you know that you can talk to.

If you still feel too awkward to go, then tell him how you feel and tell him that it would not be a good idea to attend a party where you do not know many people and that you would feel uncomfortable being there.
You do not really need an excuse, the truth should be sufficient.

Declinig an invitation is quite ok if you do it sincerely.

Thank him but decline.

Always thought it a sign of a truly confident person; to be able to decline an invitation without giving a reason.

you could ask him politely if its ok if you bought along somebody.. If he really likes you he would probably say yes..

If he says no and you are not comforatble with the situation you should not go.

Good luck.
