No: it's a big time privacy invasion issue--one that can cost a business $$$$ in Civil Court if caught doing such. However, the business would have to be run by a bluffing idiot to get outright caught sending police to verify job application information centered on home residency. And the police would be stupid to come out openly and make such investigations.
Which is why, for a discreet bit of payola, a business can bribe a cop to make "patrols" in the neighborhood, see if you're actually there, and quietly report back the information sought. Frankly, I wouldn't at all be surprised to learn this is done on a HUGE scale.
Businesses DO have the right to have law enforcement confirm if an job applicant has a criminal history record and an equally important right to know if that applicant has illegal drug evidence of use in their bloodstream or systems.....pretty much everything else is out of bounds.

It is a violation of your privacy, but whether it is illegal or not is something that would have to be decided in court.
I wonder how an employer could have the authority to send the police anywhere. The police work as law enforcement officers and cannot just be "sent" around the neighborhood to ask questions because somebody asks them to. It sounds fishy to me.

Small boring town or do they know someone? Its not illegal but i cant imagine them doing it. Maybe you should ask the chief of police or the Mayor if thats all the police have to do maybe they could cut down on the amount of officers they have. You could be a hero and save your town some money.Look at it this way you must be important to them.

No. The company has the right to check on your background but It's supposed to be the job of private investigator or security agency. If they asked the police to do it, then there must be something wrong about you. Be prepared.

I doubt they will send the police ( unless you work for the police) But if they are doing a very complete backgrouind search, yes they do that.
You will have that happen anytime you do a very complete national security background search.
In your application you give them permission to do a background search

I guess so. My neighbor applied for a police officer job in a different town and they came to my house asking questions like if I was in trouble would I want him assisting me, do my children feel comfortable around him, etc.

I suppose they would not be violating any of your rights as long as they did not go and search your pad- you did sign the job application stating that the information that you gave them is true and correct to the best of your knowledge, as of the date you signed it- subject to verification- but I do not think the police would cooperate- they have better things to do!

What kind of job do you have and in which country?
I've never heard of anything like that. As for being legal? I don't know. But it doesn't sound right.
