I was so afraid to drive for years, I mean TERRIFIED! I never thought i'd drive and my friends gave up on trying to push me to. I finally had a friend show me when i was 28! I learned on small streets and it helped that I bought a car (I felt nervous driving other people's cars, plus every car feels different, your car will start to feel very comfortable to you)
Believe it or not, I drive for a living now! I love driving and feel like I missed out on so many years of enjoyment out of fear. Just learn at your own pace, have someone you trust to teach you and help to push you further. Always be aware of your surroundings, you'll be fine. Just remember that fear and anxiety will be your enemy, learn to relax and enjoy the ride. Accidents do happen and some are not in anyone's control, just rest easy though, many cars are built nowadays to withstand an accident. They are scary, but if you do want to drive, it's just a little risk that comes with prize... just like everything else in life... right? :)

If you are a new driver , try taking your car out at a time of day when there is likely to be little traffic . The more experience you get, the more relaxed you'll be . Stay off interstates & expressways till you feel more comfortable behind the wheel . Put in a happy CD , or a comedy CD to take your mind off accidents. Driving defensively is a good thing -just don't put all the focus on the wrong result .

People have many different fears and almost all have to be faced to be overcome (death is not one of them ;) ). The question is how do you go about releasing yourself from the fear of driving a car without letting your fear get you into trouble. What you have to do is bring it back to the basics. Everybody starts driving small and moves on to harder terrain. My dad taught me in a Geico parking lot near our house (at least if something happened we could save 15 percent on it, right?). There were no cars around and I got comfortable with the wheel. When we were ready we drove around the neighborhood from the house to the end of the street and eventually the whole neighborhood. Keep in mind that these are all familiar places. The key here is making sure that you associate the negative stimulus (your fear of driving) with a good one (the comfort and safety of your home). Once you prove to yourself that their is nothing to fear, take the next step and hit the main road by your house. The key is to follow the rules of the road as closely as possible. Once you get comfortable, you can decide for yourself which rules to keep and which rules to bend - that'll be between you and yourself :)

I was very nervous when I was a new driver. It took time for me to overcome it but as the first answerer said - the only way to do it is through experience. I've been driving for 7-8 years now and now I love it!
It took me about 6 months - 1 year to get really comfortable driving.

Amen.Had the same problem when I first learned to drive. Now people have to learn to overcome their fears of me being behind a steering wheel of a moving vehicle.

That is not that unreasonable of a fear. It is the number one cause of personal injury and death out of all forms of transportation. How ever the only way to over come this fear is by gaining experience behind the wheel.

When you are driving - you have to take control over your situation a much as possoble.
I alway look for and identify escape routes as I drive along.
I also assume every other driver is impaired in some way - especially truckers - I just assume they are "speeding" their asses off.
