Depends on the site - not all sites rely on advertising for revenue. However sites that do use advertising do rely heavily on traffic. Most work on a pay-per-click basis - the web site charges the person wanting to post an ad a certain amount per each time their ad is clicked.

For example: if a site gets 1 million visitors in one year, and 5% will click on an ad, that's 50,000 clicks. If they charge 10 cents per click, that's $5000.
