If tragedies such as 9/11 have the power to pull the people of a country together and feel a bit closer and united with each other, at least for a time... Do we need a worldwide alien invasion/attack to pull the world together in that way? If suddenly we were threatened as a whole planet, would that get us all to stop fighting and pull together as one people?

People need a constant reminder that there is more to life than everyday living. We are so consumed by the need to survive one more minute, hour, day, week, year, whatever that it is easy to forget the good, the bad and the ugly out there. But an alien invasion would also bring the worst out of some people, as well as the best. We are doomed to be human.

Given human nature, I tend to think it would a major unifying event, and cause most (not all, but most...) of us to think of ALL human beings as the new "Us", with the invaders becoming "Them"...

It would certainly put a whole new spin on things, wouldn't it?

No, it would probably just cause mass hysteria and rioting and destroy everything. People would be scared and loot and steal and act irrationally.
