This migh be obvious, but be sure you empty your recycle bin. If it's full, just doing that should make an immediate improvement.

Crap Cleaner (a free download) will take care of a lot of this for you. If there's still not enough room, then use earlier advice about uninstalling stuff you downloaded but don't use, and re-partitioning to free up more space. Most computers automatically section off (partition) way more hard drive than necessary when you first set up the computer, but it's not easy to fix without software such as the one mentioned earlier. You might find more tips in an easy to understand format at Komando.com.

Crap cleaner is a relatively small download, but if you don't have room even for it, then do this first:
start -> control panel -> performance and maintenance -> free up space on your hard disk

Find the "My computer" icon, and left click it. You will now be able to see the hard drives on your computer. Right click a hard drive, and go to "properties." Under the "General tab" is a cute pie chart showing your used space and free space. Below that cute chart is a "Disk Cleanup" button. Click it, and agree to delete everything. When that's done, right click the hard drive again, go to properties, and under the "tools" tab, you will see a "defragment now" button. Defragment your computer. This will often take an hour or two, so pop in a movie while you wait.

When you're defragmentation is completed, look at the results. The file names are fragments that do not appear to go to anything. Search for those files, and delete them manually.

Now, right click your Internet explorer icon, or whatever you use to surf the net. go to properties. Delete files, delete cookies, and delete settings. You may loose some of your favorites, so you might want to write down important ones elsewhere for the moment.

If you're still having trouble with space, you might consider the software you've installed. Try uninstalling ones you hardly ever use, and ones that don't really need to work ultra fast can be installed on your D drive if you have one, instead of on the C drive. This will free up space for program files and such to run better.

Finally, if necessary, buy an external USB hard drive, and transfer all your bulky picture and movie files... from vacation trips... or not... onto the removable drive.

Clear up your history and delete offline content & temporary internet files.

Uninstall all the programs you no longer need (‘Add or Remove programs’ from the control panel).

Also do a disk defragmenter by going to Start – Programs – Accessories – System Tools – Disk Defragmenter.

Lastly, go to Start – Programs – Accessories – System Tools – Disk Clean Up. (start - control panel - performance and maintenance - free up space on your hard disk).
