stars everywhere, flashes, nightgowns, zillions on jewelry ? do all these have a true meaning other than show off ?

It's nothing compared to the glamor days of the 30's thru the 60's.

Nowadays it's all paparazzi and stunts and manufactured 'red carpet' events.
Sure there is more meaning that just showing off -- it's publicity! Movies make a lot of money -- you pay to see it in the theater, you rent it at blockbuster, you might buy it and you pay once again when it's on cable. It's only right that the stars get a lot of money instead of letting the producers cash it all in.

Just like pro-athletes, their worlds are skewed from the lives we live -- they have to fly all over the world to work and promote their films -- so they have personal trainers, drivers and chefs. Their idea of what the real world is tends to be filtered through all those people kissing their butts.

The "studio system" from the old days almost owned the stars. They made them take classes, do promotions and make a lot more movies of quality. But it was also restrictive and oppressive. Still, I think the stars in the days of yore were more grounded and had a better sense of a work ethic.
