In order for something to be finished it must have a point of completion. When we envision something and formulate it exactly as planned it is finished. It is a totality. When something is done or when we are done does not mean that an object or an act is completed exactly as envisioned. It could possibly mean that we can no further do any more. If you bake a cake and your oven breaks you are done. This does not mean that the cake is completely finished, but you can no longer bake because your oven is broken. This is the same as when we quit. We are done, but not necessarily finished. Finished is "universal" and done is "subjective." You may want to read Immanuel Kant or David Hume.

I think you are really cute so, I am finished writing but I am not done with you. If you understand me write me back.

finished is incapable of further: debarred from fufther success: polished

done is a past tense of do often implying complete exhaustion.

But that is not what you asked now is it.

Think geometrically, Finished is like the outer part of any form. In order for that form to be finished it must have that outer form or limitation. Done on the other hand when applied to the same concept implies existence. The form is done would translate the form exists.

Now if you go to logic , finished becomes the equivalent of done in that both terms equate to the phrase "can do no more".

So there is your philosophy.

great question madhavi:) yOU know though these words sound synonimous but still there lies a "deep" difference !! Happiness can be found of things which may not even be beneficial to our spiritual or psychological aspect like we may go out & have our favourite dish & clothes etc., we would feel happy. But satisfaction comes from a kind of achievent, if we get good grades in studies we would get a positive feeling that says "hard word paid off" now thats more beneficial isn't it ;p[ Now peace.... I think it depends on what attitude we adopt towads the "activities" we do for "happiness" or either "satisfaction", peace actually exist in our self, it just has to be found by us. A person of ignorance might feel peace while a hard worker could be strresed. It can be even oposite to that . So peace needs to found by us.

Americans say are you done when enquiring if they can remove your plate from the table, so I guess in American done means the same thing as finished. Unfortunately, In Australia they're starting to say that as well. So I guess they are starting to mean the same thing. That's language for you. (notice how done is easier to say than finished)

You are working on a long term project. At the end of the first day you are done with the day's work, but the project isn't finished until you have done the last days work.

Hope this simple illustration helps.

Finished means either the task is completed or thats about it with reference to the task and nothing more can be done.

Done on the other hand is more systematic and the task is completed in the TRUE SENSE OF THE WORD. AND HAS BEEN WORKED OUT AND ACCOMPOLISHED..

Hope this is of use to you..

Bye!
