Saddam started as a pretty benivolent dictator, but after fighting iran he turned into a sadistic bastard.
Most people dont know that during the iran/iraq war, the iranians sent human waves of boys against iraqi machineguns, armed with only the quaran and a plastic key to "paradise". The hords of boys were so large that they actually beat down entire groups of armed iraqi soldiers. 400,000 iranians died this way in 18 months.
Saddam ended up using heavy tanks and chemical weapons in an attempt to stop the hords, with only average success.
After that point, saddam resorted to all kinds of terrible things, but mainly against the shia, who he considered iranians.
Almost all of saddam's war crimes were against the shia and the kurds from the north.
Saddam is an incredibly misunderstood person, especially by americans, including myself at one point.
We have a stereotype that he was a US pawn, and that he randomly killed innocent people.
The truth is that he had reasons for everthing he did, mainly rascism, not US agendas. He rarely bothered his own kind, the sunni.

He used to be in parliament before he became president of Iraq. Ever since he took hold of the seat of power, he has been leading Iraq and it's people to unneccesary and unjustifable wars that have hurt the poeple, economy, and land. Thank goodness he's caught. Makes a whole lot of a difference.

He's no worse than Donald Rumsfeld, the American salesman who signed him up to buy chemical weapons from the USA. Saddam is now on trial for using those weapons on his own people - although the USA didn't complain when he used them on the Iranians during the 10-year Iraq-Iran war. If Saddam is under threat of capital punishment, Rumsfeld should be as well - for this and all his other criminal acts. Better make that all of those neo-con bastards.

He was a person the CIA put into power by an overthrow for the express purpose of assaulting Iran, which he did! We supplied him gas, dual use technology and arranged for him to get weapons!
Three US Oil Companies had contracts for Iraq's oil but lost them, 2 went to Russia and 1 to France! That was the impetus for the war!
