when you use your computer, especially using the internet, your computer "fragments" or certain files, etc get placed where they shouldn't. all computers do it. you can "defragment" by going into your start menu, going to programs, then accessories, then system tools, then disk defragmenter, and letting it run. I highly recommend doing this at least once a week to keep your computer in better running condition, more if you play a lot of games.

First of all, de-fragmenting is not as needed as in the past since most modern OS's and hard drives do it automatically.
As to your answer, the word refers to two aspects of computer use that have to do with data storage.
1. The file was too big to fit into the standard allocation space and is continued on to other spaces available on the hard drive. On a new drive, these spaces will just be the next spaces available. On a rather full, used disk, these spaces may be far away on the hard drive and require the read head to move over to get them. This slows down the computer. To 'defragment' files is to read files into memory, making disk space available, and writing the files neatly back onto the drive. Then the files will be close together and when they are read the read head will find them quicker and the computer will go faster.
2. As data is written and erased from the hard drive, the spaces on it become available all over the drive. When a file is written to the hard drive, as in above, the parts can be scattered all over the place. To defragment a hard drive then, is to look at it from the hard drive point of view instead of the individual file's point of view. The result is the same. Files are read into RAM, the disk space is cleared up, and the files are written neatly back to the drive. Everything runs faster.
;-D A file can be fragmented. A drive can be fragmented. De-fragmenting puts everything back in nice order.

Files are stored on your hard drive in units called "blocks". Because you can't always get enough space all together on the hard drive to hold the file, it's broken up into these units that are chained together. So one file might actually exist in 100s of different places on the disk. This is bad for performance, because to read such a file, the little magnetic dohickey that jumps back and forth across the surface of your disk drive has to do it a lot to gather all the different "fragments" of the file it is reading.
To defragment a disk means to move the blocks around so that all (or most) of the blocks associated with each file are close to each other. That makes it easier to read the file because the magnetic head doesn't have to jump around. It can typically read it all at once.

if you are familiar with the game Tetris then we might be able to make a partial analogy. the game challenges you to rearrange falling objects in such a way that there are no blank spaces remaining. A disk drive, can be loosely compared to this image. Fragementation occurs when the disk drive is not able to save the next file without balnk spaces. The blank spaces on disk are the fragmentation. Over time disks will get more of these gaps which cannot be used but nevertheless reduce the overall capacity of the harddrive. Defragmentation is a technique to rearrange the various shapes ( files ) so that there are fewer gaps than previously. This results in increased disk space.

Defragment is arranging the data on hard disk in such a manner that u can utilize the hard disk upto its maximum performance.
This utility arranges the data in unused sectors, so that u can get continuos free sectors for ur further storage

As simply stated as possible. Defragmentation takes all the bits and pieces of loose files flung all over your hard drive and compacts them into smaller little packages. Thus grabbing files become quicker and your overall computer is more effecient.
