The technical term for it is a democratic republic so a lot of ppl like to argue it is not a democracy; but, actually it is.
There are many different forms of democracies with the basic concept applying when the will of the ppl is heard.
In a republic like ours, we do have this; therefore, we are a democracy. The difference between our democracy and say a direct democracy is that we elect regional representatives to do the work, study and research for us in order to make informed choices.

America is a republic, but as time and resources go, people are trying to change it into a democracy. They do this by giving up the individual rights to the country as a whole.
The reason for a republic and not a democracy?
In a democracy 5 people are in a room. 4 people dislike the 5th person. The 4 vote to kill the fifth because he is "to tall", vote carries, they kill him (legally).
In a republic. 5 people in a room, 4 people don't like the 5th person. The fifth person isn't trying to hurt the other people, they just don't like his opinion, he lives because the individuals rights are above the groups rights.

A republic is ANY form of government that is NOT a monarchy. So it is a republic. While there are several types of democracies, the US is a democracy. It is a form of government where the populace has a role in policy and candidates in which to be ruled by.

Republic according to Ben Franklin. Before recently the technology wasn't available to get the people involved in the government any closer. Don't king we will change; it isn't in the politician's interest.
